This is happening in many industries, including wastewater management, where professionals often wonder, "Will AI replace me?"

The Guys Behind The AI

Billy Gilmartin, co-founder of SewerAI, is no stranger to these concerns and is keen to showcase the benefits of AI:

"Everyone is talking about it, but I think what remains to be very unclear to professionals, especially in wastewater, is how can I use AI to my benefit?" he says.

Billy's path to AI began with his own sewer cleaning and inspection business. His role as a contractor provided him with unique insights into the challenges faced by those working in wastewater infrastructure across the nation. It was during this time that he met Matt Rosenthal, who specialized in sewer inspection software. The two shared a vision for the future and saw an opportunity to address widespread inefficiencies in the industry.

"We saw the future the same way," Billy recalls, "and decided to do something about it by incorporating this business called SewerAI."

Creating One Source Of Ground-Truth

After extensive consultations with industry stakeholders—contractors, utility workers, regulators, and others—Billy and Matt identified critical inefficiencies that were wasting the time of wastewater professionals and placing unfair expectations on them:

“They’re expected to go out and basically be a radiologist for pipelines and run at the speed of an all-star running back,” Billy admits.

An operator spends 66% of a sewer inspection documenting their observations or diagnosing the issue by looking through a binder. Later, that data is given to a civil engineer, who then spends time re-analyzing and coding that same video footage, for fear of misdiagnosis by the operator.

For Billy and Matt, AI was the way to relieve operators of unrealistic demands and offer a “one and done” review process that everyone could trust.

AutoCode Created To Serve & Detect

This realization led to the creation of AutoCode, SewerAI's first product. This computer vision AI tool automatically detects conditions during sewer inspections and produces a standardized NASSCO PACP report. This allows operators to concentrate on capturing high-quality video, while engineers can focus more on designing and implementing the necessary repairs. Initially, AutoCode was limited to working effectively in 8-inch VCP pipes, but after continuous refinement and testing by NASSCO-certified technicians, it evolved into a robust tool capable of handling various pipe sizes and materials.

Pioneering Data Management

Billy also highlighted significant issues in data management within the industry. The traditional method involved physically transporting data, which was not only costly but also prone to risks. This led to the development of Pioneer, a platform that enhances productivity by transitioning the entire data management process to the cloud.

"We have a completely vertically integrated system that helps wastewater professionals to increase their productivity, significantly reduce their costs, and increase the accuracy of the data so that cities can make the wisest decisions about how to maintain their sewer collection systems," reports Billy.

Thinking Ahead To Above-Ground Applications Of AI

With tools like AutoCode and platforms like Pioneer, SewerAI is paving the way for broader applications of AI in infrastructure management, potentially extending beyond wastewater to areas such as roadways, bridges, and electrical systems. But infrastructure, historically, is an out-of-sight, out-of-mind problem— especially when it comes to sewer systems: “Three billion feet [of sewers] are at the end of their useful life,” states Billy.

Yet, Billy remains optimistic about the future and the role of AI in creating a safer, more sustainable environment. "Our mission is to find cracks in the system, predict risk to society, and prescribe solutions for a more safe and sustainable future. We better wake up to these things because we want our grandchildren to experience a better life than the one we have today," he states.

Keeping The Human In Superhuman

SewerAI is putting workers’ minds at ease by proving that AI is not a threat but rather a “partner in grime,” so to speak. There is no shortage of work for those in wastewater, and integrating SewerAI products allows them to do their jobs with superhuman speed and accuracy.

“So to answer the burning question: No, our AI isn’t coming for your job. It’s coming to help you cover twice as much ground in a day, cut video review by up to 70%, annotate videos 6x faster, and achieve 100% coding accuracy. AI plus you is superhuman – and you can’t be superhuman without the human turning results into real solutions.”

Another human component important to SewerAI’s business is its customer service and easy access to the technology. Knowing that users need to “see it to believe it,” any person can upload a 100 Gigabyte inspection video and test AutoCode themselves for free through the SewerAI website. There are also video tutorials available as well as a live chat representative ready to assist within two minutes to help customers troubleshoot an issue (even if that issue is not related to a SewerAI product).

AI: Power to the People

Despite the specter of a robot revolution, AI presents opportunities rooted in science fact rather than science fiction. Solutions like those created by SewerAI power human possibility with AI-driven technology that makes work easier, faster, and more accurate, enabling Artificial Intelligence to live up to the name.

Those interested in learning more about SewerAI and its AI-powered applications are invited to visit the company’s website: www.sewerai.com.
Volunteering is more than just an act of raising your hand or being eager to take part. The plant where I worked hosted a local section meeting for wastewater operators. They provided technical training, hot coffee, tasty food, and a plant tour, what more could an operator ask for?

Apparently, the section’s leadership had an ask of their own. “We need volunteers. AI in test delivery

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) came to the fore during the pandemic, when it was used in fully automated proctoring to facilitate a rapid move to secure remote testing. The backlash was understandably strong, and it’s worth restating that PSI has never used fully automated proctoring. We stand by our commitment not to do so, and all decisions are monitored and / or reviewed by trained proctors – a human is always involved.

However, it is our responsibility to explore the potential benefits of AI and other technologies in test delivery for the benefit of our clients. And we fully intend to leverage the technology to start thinking differently and challenge ourselves. While continuing to ensure that any use of AI is always backed by human intervention, with fairness and bias mitigation considered on an ongoing basis.

Any implementation of AI would consider and factor in these key elements:

AI in test development

In just the last year, the use of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT has widened the debate around the use of AI from test delivery to test development. As with test delivery, there are potential threats, but there are also huge opportunities.

For example, AI offers us a tool to look beyond traditional multiple-choice types of questions and explore diverse item types, such as simulations and interactive items. It also helps us leverage the skills and involvement of our valuable Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in a different way. Introducing efficiencies that not only increase the size and security, but also the quality and size of our item banks.

Again, human involvement is essential. Your SMEs should always have oversight of any AI generated content. As well as quality assurance, this includes regular checks to ensure AI generated items are aligned with your test content specification and don’t contain unintended bias. Full transparency with test takers about how you are using AI in your test development processes is also important.

Read more about how to navigate AI in test development.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) in testing

The awareness of the importance of DE&I in testing will continue to grow in 2024, and the tools and technologies we have to ensure inclusivity will improve alongside this. There is a shared commitment across the testing industry to make our tests and exams accessible to diverse test takers, including neurodivergent candidates and those with disabilities.

Striving for DE&I in testing is a win-win. Our tests are more accessible for test takers, and our clients can reach a wider pool of test takers to grow and diversify their programs. Testing organizations are seeking to offer tests in alternative formats to accommodate test takers and ensure they have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their skills. Alternative formats such as braille and audio versions are examples of these accommodations.

It would be remiss of me to omit the fact that our test delivery platform is compatible with assistive technologies, such as screen readers and voice recognition. Also, the ability to customize accessibility features to the individual needs of the test taker is improving, whether that’s font size, background color, or contrast.

Listen to episode 2 of our podcast about DE&I in testing.

Test security and data forensics

Strictly speaking, test security isn’t really a trend, as it’s always on the agenda. However, the technologies we have available to improve test security are changing all the time. For example, near to real-time data forensics is something we are developing further and we know our clients are interested in.

The use of data and analysis shortly after a testing session helps us to quickly identify and understand test violations. These might show up in data irregularities or anomalies that are consistent with cheating. We can then work with our clients to respond accordingly, in line with their testing program’s policies.

Near real-time data forensics has multiple benefits. From picking up technical issues and resource allocation in the short term, to supporting continuous improvement in the medium and longer term. Watch this space for updates later in the year.

Test taker voice

The final trend I see coming to the fore in 2024 is the growing importance of the test taker voice. We have more choice than ever before in almost every area of life, and testing is no different. For testing programs to survive and thrive into the future, the test taker experience must be exceptional. And that’s why we’ve recruited a Vice President of Test Taker Experience at PSI.

Our whole team is working together to find ways to improve test taker engagement from start to finish. We’re looking at best practice in other industries and engaging with test takers through focus groups and surveys to capture their views and perspectives. All supported by data and analytics to drive our decisions about how we change and improve.

Embracing opportunity

Over the coming year we will embrace the opportunities that come with new technologies and methods, while ensuring we take a well informed and measured approach to change. We don’t know what the next 12 months will bring, but it’s certainly an exciting time to be working in the assessment industry.

The PSI team will be attending and presenting at the Association of Test Publishers (ATP) Conference in March 2024. I’m looking forward to being involved in sessions on AI, web crawling and data forensics, and assessment essentials.

See the original blog on PSI's Knowledge Hub, HERE.
The kanātan nipīy program meets the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls To Action by providing pathways to employment in water treatment for Indigenous learners
January 6, 2023 – The kanātan nipīy (the water is clean/clean water) program for Indigenous learners, which was first offered in 2019, is continuing for 2023.

Volunteering can send you on an adventure!

Years ago, I found myself at a crossroad. I was starting a new career and was clueless to the world of water and wastewater. The plant where I worked hosted a local section meeting for wastewater operators. They provided technical training, hot coffee, tasty food, and a plant tour, what more could an operator ask for?

Apparently, the section’s leadership had an ask of their own. “We need volunteers. Any takers?” Me, being enthusiastic and willing to learn new things, raised my hand. Being an active volunteer not only benefits the entire community, but volunteering can also enable you to try new things in a safe environment.

Not only has volunteering given me the chance to practice leadership skills and improve technical knowledge, but it has built peer relationships that go well beyond wastewater. As my peer group expands, so do new opportunities. Every time I volunteer, I can share my new experiences and acquire skills.

Volunteering should be viewed as a pathway for skill development. I am a true believer that good operators are also good students. The same can be said about great operators being great students. Great operators are effective in communication and proficient in problem solving. Volunteering allows for peer-to-peer interaction where you can develop various skills.

Just this month I had the chance to learn about public education and outreach.
